Happy Friday!

Fentanyl Awareness Day
May 10, 2022 was the first ever Fentanyl Awareness Day, and Mount Vernon High School is working to bring awareness to this issue.  MVHS teacher, Tim Hornbacher, has been helping share light on Fentanyl Awareness by sharing stories that have affected families in our own county.  Tim, along with teacher Cheryl Breum, helped organize presentations with two mothers, who both lost their children to Fentanyl poisoning, and a young man who was on that pathway.  Thank you, Tim and Cheryl, for your dedication to this very important topic. Families can learn more about Lori’s story by viewing THIS video, created for our MVHS students by Tim and his team.  

FREE Opioid Awareness & Narcan Training for Skagit Community Members 
If you’d like to learn more about the signs and symptoms of a Fentanyl overdose and how Narcan is used in an emergency to treat an opioid overdose, then please be sure to attend this important training on May 14th from 11-2pm. This free forum will be held at LaVenture Middle School and childcare will be provided during the event.  For more information, please see the attached flier.
 
MVHS Artwork
MVHS students' printmaking artwork is currently being displayed in the high school library. Teacher Helene Zawila, led students in making these Northwest bird prints using a linoleum block printing process. Great job students, they are amazing!  If you’d like to view them, you can check out the MVHS Art website HERE, to get a closer look at their detailed artwork.  

MVHS Sports

• The MVHS boys soccer team, Coach Behr Ibarra, finished the season 16-1, second seed in the district tournament, and the number 4th ranked team in the state. Great job team!  They play in the District Finals this Saturday at 4pm at Shoreline Stadium. 
• Baseball, Coach Tony Wolden, has a "winner to state” game this Saturday at 4 pm at Everett Funko Field.
• Girls’ Tennis, Coach Ellen Gray, is in their second day of the 3A Sub District tournament at the high school.
• Track athletes, Coach Kodiak Landis, head to Oak Harbor today for their 3A Sub District tournament
• Softball Coach Bob Cyr, will play their first District game today at 4PM vs. Marysville-Pilchuck at Phil Johnson Fields in Everett.

United Way Fundraiser

Upcoming Events

• This is the last day to sign up for NCTA’s Kitchen Wars.  This event is being held Tuesday, May 17 from 5:30pm - 7:30pm @ NCTA. This is a great opportunity to see what students are learning in the Culinary Program at NCTA.  If you’d like to purchase tickets, you can get them HERE.

 

• Kindergarten Roundup events-The district is hosting Kindergarten Roundup events at most schools next week.  Children who turn 5 by August 31, 2022 can enroll via online applications, and attend the Kindergarten Roundup at their boundary school next week. Jefferson Hanging Baskets
Jefferson Elementary school students put their skills to work caring for and cultivating hanging baskets that were sold just before Mother’s Day.  Students raised over $2000, money that will support the garden program that teaches over 400 students in the weekly STEM classes, as well as after school programs with teachers Roberta Carlson and Alyssa Klier. For this project, a big shout out to Smith Gardens, who played a vital role in this program by donating supplies to Jefferson Elementary. Also, kudos to staff members Roberta Carlson, Alyssa Klier, and Chad Norman, for their hard work. Way to go team! 

Bulldog Unified Soccer team took on the Squalicum Storm this week, and it was another incredible night of pride and enthusiasm.  Coaches Allie Lunden and Gina Garding work with students from the Mount Vernon High School team, teaching teamwork, life skills, and helping students build lifelong friendships.  MVHS assistant principal, Chris Oliver, has also been an instrumental part in building this amazing program. Way to go team!

¡Feliz viernes!

Día de Concientización sobre el Fentanilo
El 10 de mayo de 2022 fue el primer Día de concientización sobre el fentanilo, y Mount Vernon High School está trabajando para generar conciencia sobre este problema. El maestro de MVHS, Tim Hornbacher, ha estado ayudando a compartir información sobre la concienciación sobre el fentanilo al compartir historias que han afectado a familias en nuestro propio condado. Tim, junto con la maestra Cheryl Breum, ayudaron a organizar presentaciones con dos madres, quienes perdieron a sus hijos por envenenamiento con fentanilo, y un joven que estaba en ese camino. Concientización GRATIS sobre opioides y capacitación sobre Narcan para miembros de la comunidad Skagit
Si desea obtener más información sobre los signos y síntomas de una sobredosis de fentanilo y cómo se usa Narcan en una emergencia para tratar una sobredosis de opioides, asegúrese de asistir a esta importante capacitación el 14 de mayo de 11 a 2 p. m. Obra de arte de MVHS
Las obras de arte de grabado de los estudiantes de MVHS se exhiben actualmente en la biblioteca de la escuela preparatoria. • El equipo de fútbol masculino de MVHS, el entrenador Behr Ibarra, finalizó la temporada 16-1, segundo sembrado en el torneo distrital y el equipo clasificado número 4 en el estado. Gran equipo de trabajo! Juegan en las Finales del Distrito este sábado a las 4pm en el Shoreline Stadium.
• Béisbol, el entrenador Tony Wolden, tiene un juego de "ganador para el estado" este sábado a las 4 pm en Everett Funko Field.
• La entrenadora de tenis femenino Ellen Gray está en su segundo día del torneo del subdistrito 3A en la escuela secundaria.

• Eventos de resumen de kinder El distrito organizará eventos de Kindergarten Roundup en la mayoría de las escuelas la próxima semana. Los niños que cumplan 5 años antes del 31 de agosto de 2022 pueden inscribirse a través de solicitudes en línea y asistir al Resumen de kinder en la escuela de su zona la próxima semana. Plantas y flores de Jefferson 
Los estudiantes de la escuela primaria Jefferson pusieron sus habilidades a trabajar cuidando y cultivando canastas colgantes que se vendieron justo antes del Día de la Madre. Los estudiantes recaudaron más de $2000, dinero que apoyará el programa de jardinería que enseña a más de 400 estudiantes en las clases STEM semanales, así como programas extracurriculares con las maestras Roberta Carlson y Alyssa Klier. Por este proyecto, un gran agradecimiento a Smith Gardens, quien desempeñó un papel vital en este programa al donar suministros a la Primaria Jefferson. Además, felicitaciones a los miembros del personal Roberta Carlson, Alyssa Klier y Chad Norman, por su arduo trabajo. ¡Bien hecho equipo!
